Winter Crafts For Kids – Pinecone Bird feeder

This winter craft for kids is a favorite of children who enjoy watching birds and is a wonderful way for children to learn about the various species of birds in your area. Many birds do stick around for winter, and even the ones that normally migrate will stay if there's enough food.

What many don't realize though is that while birds will fill up on foods such as breadcrumbs, they require seeds and fat for the energy that will keep them alive on cold nights. This craft uses both fat and seeds.

Fatty foods, such as the peanut butter used in this craft help our feathered friends to maintain their required 108 F° body temperature. The seeds on the pinecone bird feed help meet bird's high-energy demands because they contain high levels of carbohydrates. Seeds also provide vitamins and protein.

If you buy packaged bird feed with mixed seeds for this craft, choose ones that have a high content of sunflower seeds and white proso millet and avoid those with fillers, such as wheat seeds and milo (fort the same reason you shouldn't feed them bread). To attract cardinals, juncos and many other species of birds, include black oil sunflower seeds.

This natural pinecone bird feeder is such an easy craft to make and reaps so much enjoyment, the children may want to make a few. They are also attractive additions to the winter landscape.

Hello, Cupcake!: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make

Supplies

  • Pinecones – medium to large
  • Smooth peanut butter
  • Birdseed (following above suggestions)
  • Butter knife or table knife
  • Yarn or Ribbon (red will look Christmassy in an evergreen tree)
  • Scissors

Directions

1. Cut a piece of yard or ribbon that is long enough to wrap around the top section of pinecone, and hang from a tree branch.

2. Wrap one end of the yarn or ribbon around the pinecone near the top and tie in a knot.

3. Place a large glob of peanut butter on the paper plate.

4. Using the knife, spread peanut butter on the pinecone (inside and outer edges, leaving a few spots free for birds to perch).

5. Sprinkle on the birdseed, and then roll the pinecone in the birdseed that falls off onto the plate.

6. Hang the bird feeder on a tree branch. If it is near another branch, birds can use the lower branch for a perch. If you have predators that climb the trees, then hang it so that nothing can reach the bird. Birds will often perch on parts of the pinecone that aren't covered with peanut butter.

7. When the seeds on the pinecones are nearly depleted, bring them back inside and add more peanut butter and seeds. Keep the food going into spring until bird's natural food supplies have returned.

Fun Kids Crafts E-Book

Have you been searching the net for kid's crafts ideas for ever? I'm sure you feel frustrated by now because it feels as if you are wasting hours, hours you could have spent doing crafts with the kids. You definitely need a way to get hold of kid's crafts ideas faster and easier. I know exactly how you feel; we went through the same pain to get crafts to do with our little granddaughter Anabel, NO MORE!

Now there is a way you can stop all this and spend your time having fun with the kids actually doing the crafts. I have come across an e-book that has lots of fun and easy kid's crafts ideas for you to choose from. The name of the book is Fun Kids Crafts. The descriptions in this e-book are easy to follow and where it is necessary there are templates that you can print with ease. Most of the crafts can also be adjusted to suit your kid's level of development.

Fun kids crafts starts with a very good selection of Bible crafts. These crafts also include "Christian" crafts to teach the kids real "Christian" behavior. What I especially find handy is the pre-school craft that is also included in these bible crafts.

In the section with birthday gifts for dad, there is a really easy and fun craft that will be ideal for father's day. It boils down to "Dad, I'm nuts about you." Do have a look at it; even the little pre-schoolers will be able to do it with a little help. That is not all, there is still a whole category of father's day crafts that you'll love!

This only touches on all the great kids' crafts ideas you'll get in this e-book. Have a look at some of the other crafts available:
