Kid's Craft Ideas For Summer: Nature Art for Children

It's summer, and the kids are asking for things to do (besides chores). This is the ideal time to use one of our kid's craft ideas for summer.

Fortunately, nature is in full bloom in the summer time, providing inspiration and an abundance of free supplies. If the children are already interested in nature and enjoy the outdoors, then these crafts are sure to please. For the more indoor, computer/video game type kids, these crafts offer a window of opportunity to share your enjoyment of the outdoors with them and show them some cool, albeit low tech art they can create.

Leaf Imprinted Bandanna Summer craft:

Supplies

White bandanna or piece of white cotton material
Fresh leaves and flowers
Rubber mallet
Waxed paper

Directions

Place waxed paper on a sturdy counter top or table.

Arrange leaves and flowers on top of the waxed paper.

Place the bandanna or material on top.

Pound the material gently with the rubber mallet. You only need to pound on the places where there are leaves or flowers underneath.

Continue pounding until the colors from the leaves and flowers seep through the material.

You now have a beautiful bandanna to wear or a pretty piece of artwork to frame or display on your dresser.

Flower Printed Cards:

Supplies

Flowers

Card stock or any paper that absorbs well, such as parchment and recycled paper.

Adhesive tape that you can remove, such as Scotch Tape.

Household hammer.

Directions

Place card stock on table or counter.
Arrange flowers on the card stock. Place them so that the most colorful side or more interesting texture is facing down.
Secure the flowers with tape, covering the petals completely.
Gently tap with the hammer on each flower for a minute or two.
Remove petal with tape. The colored image of the flower will remain.

You now have a beautifully designed card or art print to hang on your wall.

If you enjoy calligraphy or stenciling, you could add an artistic message, such as a birthday greeting or a poem or quote about flowers. Or neatly write one with a colored pen to complement the colors in your flower printings.

Twig Frame

This makes a nice frame for a photograph or for the flower printing described above. While searching for twigs you will notice that not all twigs are alike. For example, cherry tree twigs have a pretty, reddish tint, while some are almost white and others brown. Find ones with the color and look that you want.

Supplies

Twigs: Collect around a dozen. One bunch should be about 2 inches longer than your picture, and the other bunch should be about 2 inches wider. Break off ends of twigs to make them the right sizes.
Twine.
Glue (hot glue works well, but depending on the maturity of the child, the parent may want to handle the hot glue gun).
Picture.

Directions

Place your picture on a flat surface, such as a table.
Separate the longer bunch of twigs into two bunches and place them on the two sides of the picture. Then do the same for twigs that will go across the top and bottom. When placing the twig, leave about an inch between them and the picture.
Your picture should now be surrounded by a rectangle of twigs. Remove the picture. Using the twine, tie the twigs at each corner, wrapping the twine in an "X" fashion and then tying a knot in the back.
Glue the picture onto the back of the frame.
For a picture hanger, create a small loop of twine and glue to the center of the top of the frame.

Besides being a great way to frame your flower and leaf art work, this rustic, twig frame is also perfect for framing a photograph taken on a camping trip or some other outdoor adventure.
