Kids Summer Crafts – Caterpillar - Butterfly House

The fun of kids summer crafts is that it can be done outdoors. Who doesn't enjoy butterflies? Children seem to especially delight in these creatures, and this caterpillar cage allows children to observe their metamorphosis. The craft will be easiest for children grades 3 and up, but young ones can carry out many of this project's tasks.

To find caterpillars, look for plants with bites taken out of the leaves. You will want to collect leaves from the same plant you find the caterpillars eating because they are very picky eaters. The Monarch butterfly caterpillar feeds on milkweed, which is a plant that you can easily grow and is found at many nurseries. By planting in early spring, you will have nice size plants when the butterflies visit.

If you don't have time to grow milkweed to attract Monarchs that will lay the eggs that hatch into caterpillars, you can purchase caterpillars here: http://www.livemonarch.org/  This site includes lots of information about Monarchs.

In case Monarchs don't visit your region or you have other favorite butterflies, here is a Website with a chart that matches butterflies and caterpillars with their favorite plants.http://butterflywebsite.com/butterflygardening.cfm

For example, you can see here that while the Monarch lays her eggs on the milkweed, the Monarch sips nectar from Dogbane and Buddleia

flowers. The Eastern Tailed Blue butterfly also drinks from the Dogbane, but her larva (another name for caterpillar) feed on clover or peas (the leaves of the plant).

Once you have the plant that your caterpillar needs to eat, then it's time to craft your cage.

Hello, Cupcake!: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make

Supplies for your kids summer craft:

  • Large, clear container, such as a terrarium or one-gallon jar.
  • Screen (small mesh) to cover the top of the container.
  • Elastic to secure the screen lid.
  • Floral tubes or moist paper towels.
  • Mister (any clean, bottle with a fine spray nozzle will do as long as it has never contained anything but water).
  • Leaves from plants your type of caterpillar eats, such as milkweed for Monarchs.
  • Sticks about as tall as the jar.
  • Caterpillars (three to four should be plenty).

Directions for this craft:

1. Add the caterpillars and leaves to the cage. Caterpillars are fragile so it's best to carry them on the leaves you find them on. They hang on so tightly to things that if you try to pull it loose you could damage its legs. Also, they are very sensitive to bacteria on our skin.

2. Replace leaves every day. Caterpillars need fresh food, so place the stems of your leaves in floral tubes you have filled with water or wrap the stems with wet paper towels. Check plants first for spiders and other insects. Don't add any containers of drinking water because caterpillars may fall in and drown. They get their water from the plants. Give them fresh leaves everyday.

3. Add a few sticks for caterpillars to climb when they are ready to form their cocoons.

4. Periodically mist the inside of the cage because caterpillars prefer a somewhat humid environment. Don't soak or mold will grow.

5. Every few days clean the cage because what goes into caterpillars comes out. Caution: Before the caterpillar goes into the chrysalis stage, it will become quite inactive.  It's very important not to handle it during this time.

6. After the caterpillars cocoon be sure the chrysalis pupae are hanging up high enough on the sticks so that when the butterflies emerge they have room to spread their wings. The butterfly must be able to spread its wings to dry without touching the ground or sides of cage. If the chrysalis falls of the stick you can gently pick it up and using a dot of glue from a hot glue gun that has cooled but is still liquid to attach it. Only glue the tip of the chrysalis.

7. Continue lightly misting the cage daily.

8. After the butterflies emerge and their wings have dried, they will flutter around in the jar. This is a good time to set them free in the garden.

I'm sure you feel frustrated by now because it feels as if you are wasting hours, hours you could have spent doing crafts with the kids. You definitely need a way to get hold of kid's crafts ideas faster and easier. I know exactly how you feel; we went through the same pain to get crafts to do with our little granddaughter Anabel, NO MORE!

Fun kids crafts starts with a very good selection of Bible crafts. These crafts also include "Christian" crafts to teach the kids real "Christian" behavior. What I especially find handy is the pre-school craft that is also included in these bible crafts.

In the section with birthday gifts for dad, there is a really easy and fun craft that will be ideal for father's day. It boils down to "Dad, I'm nuts about you." Do have a look at it; even the little pre-schoolers will be able to do it with a little help. That is not all, there is still a whole category of father's day crafts that you'll love!

This only touches on all the great kids' crafts ideas you'll get in this e-book. Have a look at some of the other crafts available:
