Kid's Crafts – Create a Shadow Box to Display Mementos
Shadow boxes, an old form of folk art, provide wonderful showcases for mementos. These are fun and easy for children of all ages, from pre-school upwards to decorate. Basically, a shadow box is a shallow box that hangs on the wall like a framed picture, allowing you to display both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional keepsakes, from photographs to objects that remind one of a special time, people in their life, favorite activity, etc. Or a shadow box can hold a collection of items that represent a child's favorite things in life.
This project can also make a nice Mother's Day or Father's Day gift that depicts their favorite things, including the children of course! In school, shadow boxes are sometimes created from cardboard boxes as creative visual aids for book reports and such.
A young child, with a little help, can make a shadow box from a sturdy cardboard box, such as a shoe box, while older children with supervision may enjoy building the box as well. Another option is to have the home or lumber supply store cut the wood into the right-sized pieces. You can make the box as large as you want, but typically shadow boxes are around 9 by 11 inches with around 4 inches depth.
Keep in mind that the size and weight of the completed project will determine whether you mount it on the wall in the same way you would a heavy mirror or whether you can use a simple picture hanger.
You can also find pre-constructed shadow box frames at craft stores, and many of these have glass covers to protect the items and pictures from dust and humidity. Buying a pre-made shadow box is not cheating because the creative part of this craft is in the decorating.
Hello, Cupcake!: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make
- Box (shoe box or shallow wooden box, dimensions of your choice.)
- Paint
- Brush
- Mod Podge or clear drying glue
- Scissors (round tip safety scissors for young children)
- 3-dimensional objects: these objects might include:
- Actual mementos, such as a ticket stub from an amusement park
- Objects that represent favorite things, such as a fishing fly for Dad
- Objects that help create a scene, such as a miniature deer or pinecone
Here are the steps to creating a shadow box:
1. Decide on your theme. As mentioned above, this can be anything you like. Here are some more examples of shadow box themes:
- Wildlife
- Vacation
- Landscape or Seascape
- Holiday
- If a gift, that person's favorite things
- Your favorite things (people, places, things, etc.)
- Your Pet
- Hobby
Instead of starting with a theme, another approach is to simply start looking through your collections of mementos and take it from there.
2. If you are starting with a box that isn't already painted or finished with a wood stain, then the first step is paint your box. In folk art tradition, you could use bright colors and stenciling even. If you have a theme, like the ocean, you could paint the background an ocean blue with even sky to match. It's all up to you!
3. Using the glue or Mod Podge, attach the 2-dimensional objects, such as photographs or clipped pictures from magazines to the background. Small 3-dimensional objects may also be attached here, such as a feather, pebbles, fishing fly – ones that won't protrude too much.
4. Complete your shadow box by adhering the rest of the 3-dimensional objects (such as miniatures) on the shelf-like bottom of the box.
You'll probably find this was so much fun that you want to make more. That's fine because as you can see, there can be a shadow box for every occasion and memory!
