Easter Crafts: Egg Decorating Without Any Accidents

Dunking plain white eggs into a bowl and watching them turn a different color is magic for any kid. If you are not careful, this can turn out to be a very messy activity indeed!

Here are a few ideas to help minimize the mess this year:

1. Try stickers.

If the traditional method of egg decorating is not terribly important to you, this is a way to minimize the muss and fuss during Easter. Stickers make easy and very beautiful decorations. They leave no mess to clean up afterwards. And, there’s nothing tricky about it. Just purchase ordinary Easter stickers and stick them onto the eggs and you’re done. I know not all kids will fall for this, but, if you’re lucky your kid may be like my granddaughter who absolutely loves stickers and cannot find enough surfaces to stick them on to. For her this is ideal!

2. Dye the eggs at the stove.

Avoid the mess that comes with sitting your kids at the table with their own dipping cups. Mix the dye ingredients in a five quart Dutch oven. Wrap an apron around your kids. Let your kids take the dried, boiled eggs and place them in the dye solution. When the eggs have been left in the dye long enough to be ready you can use a slotted spoon to lift the dyed eggs out of the pan. Because the slotted spoon leaves less of the liquid on the spoon there is less liquid to make a mess on you, your kids, the stove and the floor. Now you can spoon the eggs back into the cartons and place the cartons in the refrigerator until it is time to use them.

3. Work on the kitchen floor.

The lower you are to the ground, the shorter the distance a boiled egg has to fall. Spread an old vinyl tablecloth on the floor. Give each kid an apron and a pair of exam gloves. The gloves can be purchased from any medical supply store. Gloves allow the kids to dip the eggs with their hands instead of a spoon. This way there is a whole lot less of a mess without the kids ending up with rainbow colored hands! When they have finished all they need to do is to take off their gloves and throw them away. Everything can be cleared almost instantly.

4. Purchase a ready to use Easter egg kit.

There are very good Easter egg decorating kits available. Each year it is amazing to see what they come up with. Something that will make the egg decorating process easier and faster, but keeping the fun of egg decorating going. There are even egg wrapping kits available which create virtually no mess at all. The pre-formed pattern is ready for the decorator to transfer to the dried eggs. There are even egg cups available with their own dipper so you don’t need spoons at all. Have a look at your local craft stores or search for them online.
