Musical Instrument Creating for Young Children

Children love to make their own music and dance around a room. It's great fun but also helps them to develop many skills. Rhythm and movement is an important part of early childhood curriculum too. Young children also love making things that they can really use, provided the craft is simple and easy enough to be fun.

For these reasons, the following two musical crafts are perfect for the preschool and kindergarten aged child, but may also prove fun for children in grades 1– 3. Children can also learn much about how sound is made by creating these musical instruments, so be prepared to answer lots of curious questions as you go along!

Finger Cymbals

This instrument is found in many cultures in one form or another. In Hawaii, smooth rocks are held in such a way that the hula dancer can click them, keeping rhythm with the chant. Belly dancers are probably the most famous for their finger cymbals.

Supplies

Baby Food Jar Lids – If making two cymbals for each hand, use four lids.
Elastic
Material scraps for decorating
Glue

How To

Using the lid as a guide, trace a circle on the material.

Cut out the circle.

Glue the piece of cloth to the top of the lid.

Cut a piece of elastic just long enough so that when it is looped, a finger or thumb fits snugly.

Glue the elastic to the center of the top of the cymbal. You may need to do this part yourself using super glue or a glue gun. Or you could sew or safety pin onto the cloth before it's glued to the lid.

Repeat process for each finger cymbal until you have two for the thumb and finger on one hand and two for the other.

Paper Plate Tambourine

Here's another fun percussion craft for young children.

Supplies

2 Paper Plates
Strong, clear tape
Yarn – one or two colors
Paper Puncher
Crayons, markers or paint
