Mother's Day Craft – Decoupage Cookie Jar

This fun craft is perfect for Mother's Day. It's most suitable for grades 3 and up, but younger children can do this with a little help.

Supplies

  • Scissors: Use ones that are good for cutting out pictures with fine details. School type craft scissors work well. Remember, younger children should use round tipped, safety scissors.
  • Glue that dries clear, such as Elmer's non-toxic school glue, or Modge Podge Decoupage finish (gloss or matt).

  • Large coffee can or oatmeal box with lid. You can leave the wrapper on or take it off, since you will be covering the container with pictures.

  • Large art brush (for glue).

  • Pictures: These may be cut out from magazines, greeting cards, calendars computer print outs (from your Paint program, photographs or Websites), and/or from your own creations.

  • Paper, shelf paper or gift wrap: If you are aren't completely covering the container with pictures (which you could if you create a collage), then you may want to cover the can or oatmeal box first so it doesn't show through.

Here are some design ideas for the cookie jar. You may want to use one of these or come up with your own creative idea.

"Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?" Cover the container with colored paper, and then in the front add the letters to form this well-known first line from the popular word game. Finally print out pictures of your family (even the pets), cut them out and glue them on around the words. Instead of family, you could use a picture of the cookie monster.

Recipe and Cookie Collage. Cut out recipes and cookies from magazines, and then glue them on the container, overlapping so that the entire container is covered.

Vintage Cookie Jar: Decorate with a collage of pictures that depict a vintage kitchen with mothers in aprons, old-fashioned stoves and such. Search online for pictures from old TV shows like Leave it to Beaver and Lassie.

Directions

  1. Once you've gathered all the pages with pictures you want to use, cut them out.

  1. If you are not creating the type of collage design where everything overlaps, then first cover the oatmeal box or coffee can. Contact shelf paper can be used, but make sure it's the paper kind so you can glue your pictures to it. Plain gift-wrap also works well. Be sure to cover the lid also.

  1. This step is accomplished one picture (or letter) at a time. Turn the picture upside down, and holding it in place, smooth the glue or Mod Podge on with the brush. Then press the picture on to the container, smoothing it as you press. If it's bumpy, carefully lift up and then smooth down again. If you are making a collage design, you can overlap everything.

  1. Repeat step 3 for the outside of the lid.

  1. Once you have completed your design, allow to dry.

  1. Using the brush, cover the container and lid with the glue or Modge Podge. Dab this on with your brush. Allow to dry, and then apply another coat.

Now, all your Mother's Day cookie jar needs is some cookies!
