Halloween Kids Crafts: Children's Haunted Castle – Cardboard Craft

This is one of our Halloween kids crafts that is the perfect craft for children who love using their imaginations, as well as for budding engineers. The size of the castle depends on the size of the boxes used -- and the size of the time frame for making it. The planning can be just as much fun as the building, and after Halloween the kids can call in the ghostbusters to displace the ghosts, bats and goblins with princess fairies and knights. Or if they're Harry Potter fans, keep a ghost or two and add Harry and friends.

To get started with the spooky Halloween Castle Halloween kids craft, you will need:

One or more cardboard boxes.

Scissors: While shoe boxes are easy enough to cut, you may need heavy-duty scissors for sturdier cardboard.

Craft Knife: This is optional. A craft knife will make it easier to poke through the sides of boxes where you want to add windows, etc.

Paper towel and/or toilet paper tubes: These cardboard tubes can be turned into towers and turrets (the small towers projects from the sides of the castle).

Popsicle sticks, crafts sticks, or wooden chopsticks: These can provide support to the cardboard towers.

Glue: Glue sticks and a bottle of Elmer's white glue should be all you need. Paste will also work for adding decorations, but glue's best for the structure.

Paint or gift-wrap for covering the boxes.

Miscellaneous items, such as:

Pictures cut out from magazines, colored pages of coloring books, printed pages from Websites, etc. can help you easily add Halloween characters like Peeves and Frankenstein, as well as other types of decorations and even backgrounds inside the castle, like furniture.
Creepy creatures are easy to find in the way of plastic, miniature bats, etc. Or they can be cut from craft foam.
Castle flags can be made from toothpicks and construction paper.
Cotton can be pulled thin to make cobwebs.
Lollipop ghosts (see directions below) are fun to use.

Lollipop Ghosts

These Halloween Kids Crafts are as easy as 1,2,3 to make and can serve as the stars or supporting cast of your haunted castle.

Here's how to make them:

Drape a white tissue over a round lollipop (like a tootsie pop).
Secure the material by tying a thread around it below the candy.
Using a fine tip marker, give your ghost a face.

That's it! Now you can use the ends of the sticks to tuck the ghosts in place on the castle so that they are peeking out from windows and over turrets.

Once you have all your castle making supplies gathered, it's time to build! For design ideas, search Google Images for castles or haunted castles.

Directions

Using a pencil, draw the windows on the boxes and anything else you will want to cut out, such as a drawbridge.

Using the scissors and/or craft knife, do your cutting. If you're going to have a drawbridge:

Cut the door/drawbridge from the bottom up, so you have a flap that you can pull open or shut. You could even add a string to the drawbridge that you run through the castle and out the back, so you can open and close the drawbridge from behind.

Paint and/or paste gift wrap to the outside of boxes and cardboard tubes. Allow to dry.

Assemble your castle with glue. Before adding the towers and turrets, glue the sticks inside them for support.

If you have pictures, cut out the characters, scenes, etc. and apply to inside and/or outside of castle with glue stick.

Place the Halloween creatures where you want them.

Finally if you want to make your castle glow, add tuck fairly lights inside. Use only lights that don't get hot.
