Kids Bible Crafts, Easy Kids Crafts,  The Good Shepherd's Sheep

One of our more adorable Kids Bible Crafts, "The Good Shepherd's Sheep" reinforces the comforting and cautionary Scripture that tells children Jesus watches over us and calls us, like a good shepherd calls his sheep, when we stray. This is one of our Easy Kids Crafts for young children and is complimented by a circle game. The craft and game remind children that like the sheep, they should follow the good Shepherd but not those who may pretend to be their shepherd.  Memory verses: "I am the good shepherd. I know each of My sheep by name, and My sheep know Me."  "Those who come through Me will be saved. They will have everything they need." Scripture: John 10:1-21

Hello, Cupcake!: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make

Supplies

  • Toilet paper roll (empty)
  • Cotton balls
  • 4 cotton swabs, such as Q-Tips
  • White craft glue
  • White tissue paper
  • Brown pipe cleaner (if making ram)
  • Clear Tape
  • Aluminum foil pie tin or margarine container
  • Small piece of black or brown construction paper
  • Safety scissors or paper punch

Directions

  1. To make the sheep's legs, tape 4 cotton swabs to the empty, cardboard toilet so that they hold up the sheep.
  2. For the sheep's head, scrunch up white tissue paper into roughly the shape of a sheep's head and stuff it into one end of the roll.
  3. Pour a little glue into the container.
  4. One at a time, dip cotton balls into the glue and press onto the empty toilet paper roll. Once the cardboard is covered, press more cotton balls onto this layer and continue until the sheep is nice and woolly.
  5. The eyes can be made with the construction paper. Either cut out the round shapes or use a paper puncher. Then attach with glue to the front of the sheep's tissue paper face.
  6. If making a ram, horns can be made with pipe cleaner twisted into two curly cues. Attach with glue.
  7. Allow to dry.
  8. Children will want to bring their sheep home, but first they can also be displayed in the classroom in a cute table centerpiece. Grow a tray of wheat grass or spread Easter basket grass onto a tray. Then add shepherd figurine or paper doll. Have children assemble the flock around the shepherd!

Straying Sheep Game

You may also want to introduce this fun, yet cautionary circle, tag game to the children. It is similar to the pool game, Marco Player. The child playing the stranger is blindfolded and stands in the center of the circle. The rest of the children are the sheep. When the game begins they graze around the inside of the circle. When the stranger calls, "Sheep!" the children must say "baa-baa." The stranger is allowed to call “sheep” five times during his turn. The stranger, blindfolded, tries to tag the sheep. If by the time his or her five turns are up, the stranger hasn't caught any sheep, another child becomes the stranger. The sheep that are caught sit out the game until all sheep have been caught. Remind the children that Jesus wants us to be careful to only answer to Him, the "Good Shepherd," and to not be tricked by strangers.
