Kids Summer Craft: Fairy House Building 101
This kids summer craft is one for kids of all ages, 1-80!
They say if you build a fairy house, the fairies will come. Whether they do or not, a fairy house (or faerie house, depending on how you like to spell it) is a fun family project. Young children love fairy houses, but many older children also enjoy the creativity involved as well as the magical lore you may want to read for inspiration.
Building and decorating a fairy house can be as fun and involved as setting up housekeeping in a doll house. There are as many ways to build and furnish a fairy house as there are types of fairies.
Fairy houses are so popular as family projects that many special events are held around the country featuring them. While you may not have any visiting fairies, your fairy house will likely attract some of the fairy's woodland friends, perhaps a cricket -- which can bring as much good luck as a fairy.
Supplies for this kids summer craft:
The supplies you will need to build your fairy house depend on the type of home you want to create. Many fairy houses are built with twigs and glue. If the house will be exposed to moisture, such as rain, use water resistant glue or aquarium sealant as glue to make it last longer because regular glue will eventually dissolve in the rain. Alternatively you could set it up indoors (fairies are known to live in big people's houses that have special homes just for them. A fairy house is a really nice addition to a garden though. Many families in the Northeastern U.S. have several. Covered patios, gazebos and tree houses are other possible locations.
Hello, Cupcake!: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make
Here are some basic items that you may want to use to build your fairy house:
- Twigs and small branches
- Craft sticks (optional)
- Twine
- Glue
- Paint
- Pebbles
- Furniture (made from oven bake clay or natural items such as twigs, acorns, etc.)
- Decorative items
Since fairies are woodland creatures they will appreciate your natural looking house. To build the house, stack up the sticks to create the walls, gluing them together as you go along. To create windows and a door, use shorter sticks around those areas, leaving openings. The roof may be flat or pitched. Less rain and snow will accumulate on a pitched roof.
To create a pitched roof, glue sticks together into two "A" shapes. Then join these with a larger stick that runs the length of the house. Finally glue sticks onto both sides of this "beam" so that they come down at an angle like the "A." Once the glue dries, add the roof to the house. It may be easier to add if you first create a flat roof. You could do this with craft sticks.
Furnishing fairy houses is lots of fun. You can create the furniture with twigs also or buy doll house furniture. Another option is to model the furniture with oven-bake clay, creating little tables and chairs and a bed and anything else you think the fairies will like. Borrow from nature for other items as well. For example, acorn shells make nice, fairy sized cups or bowls. Pieces of pine needles can be woven into rugs. If you have a small picture of a fairy, you could frame it with tiny twigs and hang it on the wall.
Look around your garden, and let your imagination run wild! You can also find inspiration online by looking at other's fairy houses in Google Images and on fairy house Websites, for example. If you enjoy painting, you could paint the furniture. Fairies seem to like green a lot. Other colors from nature are also favored, such as buttercup yellow, sky blue, and flower petal pinks.
You can make your fairy house even more inviting by creating a pretty landscape. For example, use tiny pebbles for stepping-stones leading to the front door. Paint "Welcome" on the one right before the door. Find out what small plants grow well in the location of the fairy house, and plant some. Add some moss to the roof of the house. If your fairy house is indoors, you could even
create a warm and welcoming glow inside with fairy lights (tiny lights, smaller than miniature Christmas tree lights and found at many craft stores).
As you can see there is no certain way to create a fairy house. With these tips, your imagination and a little sprinkling of pixie dust, you'll be the perfect fairy house builder! This is really a fun kid's summer craft that can be as involved or as simple as you choose.
