Craft a Fourth of July Pinwheel

Most younger children love watching pinwheels spin in the breeze or as they blow on them. Children also love making "real" things, that is, things they or others can really use. For these reasons, this Fourth of July pinwheel craft is very popular with kids. Plus, they can create their own pinwheel designs! This craft is most suitable for first grade and up, and first and second graders will likely need some help with the folding.

Supplies

Pushpin.
Pencil that has never been sharpened and that has a new eraser.
Poster board (found in art and school supply sections of stores) or thick, construction paper. White works well.
Markers.
Stick-on stars (optional).
Hole puncher.

How To:

Cut two squares from the poster board or construction paper. These squares will form the pinwheel, so these should be around 5 or 6 inches, so that they are not too big for the pencil handle.

Fold each square in half to form a triangle, and then in half again to form a small triangle. Unfold. You should now have creases that form four equal triangle shapes on each square.

Decorate one side of each of the two squares. Here is one July 4 decorating idea:

First, using your markers, color red stripes on one square leaving spaces between to form the white stripes (if using white paper).

Then, color the other square blue and decorate with white or silver stick on stars.

Place the two undecorated sides of the squares together. Holding them together flat on the table, cut along each of the four creases half way up.

Using the paper punch and holding the squares together, punch a hole in each of the four corners of the square. (The holes will be just to the side of the creases.)

Carefully gather each of these four corners together so that they meet in the center of the bottom square of paper. Work gently so as no to add any creases.

You should now have all four points together so that the holes you punched are lined up, one on top of the other. Now take your push pin and pencil, and push the pushpin through the holes and into the eraser.

You now have a pinwheel! Hold it in the breeze, in front of fan or blow gently on it and watch it spin your pretty design.
